So today according to chinese calender, it is 元宵 'Yuanxiao' festival. 汤圆'Tang Yuan' is a Chinese food made from glutinous rice flour that is eaten during Yuanxiao festival. Glutinous rice flour is mixed with a small amount of water to form balls and is then cooked and served in boiling water. Tangyuan can be either small or large, and filled or unfilled. The filled one usually have flavors like peanut, black sesame and red bean and also other fillings like yam, kaya and even durian.
I will not go into detail of how the festival came about but to summarize it. Yuanxiao is a festival whereby in many Chinese families, tang yuan is usually eaten together with family. The round shape of the balls and the bowls where they are served, symbolizes the family togetherness 一家团圆.
My family will also cook tang yuan and make prayer to our ancestors during this festival to pray for good health and togetherness.
Lots of peanut is always the best (shiokness).
